What about the Joker? My current state of mind & What I've been up to.

Posted by Dekathos Jun. 24, 2008 @ 1:53 PM EDT

Ok ok. So a long time ago in a internet far, far away I was working on a movie with the Joker in it. That was years ago and I let it gather dust. Recently, I decided to finish what I started the same as I did when I went back to working on The Burning.

Anyway the problem with working on old flash is you take one look at them and you wonder what you must of been on to put something together in such a poor way that takes more work to produce and well kiddies, doesn't animate very well!

However, I had no choice but to once again work with some of the prehistoric methods I had in order to get anywhere with it.

I'm afraid ultimately, that when this does come out it will look half assed. Which bugs me because it still takes a whole lot of my time. It must be the way I go about it.

I am the slowest author in the world! Anyone who uses flash should appreciate the effort that goes into an artists work. Unless it's just me and it's easy for everyone else! But anyway, perhaps you all can keep that in mind the next time you judge a movie.

Where was I? Oh. I was never good at animating. I think I am capable at this point, of producing something with a higher FPS, smoother or half way pleasing yet I have never gotten the opportunity to or felt the need.

On the upside my art for this movie will be a whole lot better then the animation. I don't even know how many times I have redrew or recolored some characters. I can be bloody obsessive with little details even if it doesn't always show.

Also one more negative crack cause even on Newgrounds I'm my worse critic, I am still whoring the crap out of a ton of mediums partly because that's how I started working on it and partly because with the awkward animation I may have to make some sacrifices just to get this out.

Now, I've said before humor and story is important to me. I'm aware most of you do not see it that way. You want a quick laugh without having to think too hard. No offense you're sorta the audience Hollywood makes garbage like Meet the Spartans and Epic Movie for.

Anyway, yeah I do parody. Parody Paradox Productions is possibly the gayest thing I've ever come up with but it's old so I keep it for nostalgia. Does that mean I put out things that are hip and cool for the ease and popularity of it? No. Maybe in the past but not now. Even if I did, something tells me it would still do bad anyway. Hahaa.

Nope. I do things that I like and frankly get easily put off by the latest trends especially ones I feel there is just too much exposure for. Even if I happen to like something a great deal I can still get sick of its blatant over use. I've never easily gone with the flow. You'll probably be amazed how many things you enjoy that I hate with a passion!

So that's what scares me a bit. I am thinking that this flash although having absolutely nothing to do with the new Batman movie, maybe finished around that time. It's an ironic coincidence that it may happen this way and nothing more.

I don't want to sponge off the latest craze and I like to earn what I get. I would hate for it to be compared to the movie as well. However, I have no problem if it was compared to the Animated Series which is more my intent. So I've not yet decided to put my flash out during that time. If it does get done by then I mean.

Err .... No one's going to read this are they?

Oh well. It's nice to get my thoughts together. Here's a frame from the movie. I don't want to give too much away.

I agree with everything you said and I wish you luck on your Flash. I'm quite the detail whore as well, that's why I sort of gave up on animating as I figured it would take me several years to make something of the quality standard I want it to be in. I won't lie, I have quite the imagination and can picture a great animation to a song I would be listening to but it's simply too insane of an idea.

Jun. 24, 2008 | 3:07 PM Dekathos responds:

Detail isn't the best idea for 2d animation. There is too much work involved. If you noticed the state of cartoons recently the art and detail has declined tremendously, among other things. Thanks a whole bunch for the support. It's very nice to hear.

That was quite a nice little read there!

I can relate with you regarding the feeling of dismay when watching popular and successful cartoons while scratching my head thinking "what am I missing?"
I honestly watched 3 episodes of WeRBopBop back-to-back and didn't return to Newgrounds for almost 2 months.

Still, if I were you I wouldn't be shy about releasing your Joker cartoon just because it coincides with the new film. Why not? It will probably have the most impact then. Of course there is the worry about the bloated score on the back of the films success but you've been here since '01 and if you were just a popularity whore people would have known about it for a loooong time!

Judging from the picture it looks a hell of a lot better than most of the crap here and there's got to be something good about it or else you wouldn't have gone back to it after all this time! I don't think that theres any danger of you becoming an Egorapter-clone or, even worse, Dan Berry.

Go for it, I say! Send me a PM when it's done and I promise to leave a review.

Good luck!

Wow. I love you. Hahaha. ;) I'm sort a worried about tons of annoying Iron-Badesque Batman awesome movies out at the same time but we'll see. I will definitely pm you when I'm done.

well, i cant help but agree here.
many movies, songs, and even, yes, even flash movies are overrated.
people want a quick laugh, no problem witht hat, heck, most of the movies i like are comedies. but still! i prefer some quallity in that comedy, if you get what i mean. not just a slapstick, or a random gag, but add some feel to it, something unique, something that will make me memorise it over the years, and say ''what a good movie, i have seen!'' or at least make me see it more than once, and not throw it off the window.

smae goes for all movies. oroginallity, people, we need it.

i look forward to your next project.

its grand to see my fave artist do flash.

or any type of art

Jun. 24, 2008 | 11:34 PM Dekathos responds:

I think that way about a good comedy myself when I watch a really excellent movie or something. I sometimes remember the lines to it.

Looking forward to the flash. You should post on the BBS more. :)

I couldn't. It would just aggravate me and I would only post to troll. Thank you though.

Yeah well, the dark knight can suck my balls.

Holy Shit! Seriously, I quit watching the Animated Series as soon as it moved from Fox to WB when they changed the animation style.

I loved Tom Fulp's role in the animation though. HAHA!

Jul. 23, 2008 | 9:56 PM Dekathos responds:

It was better on Fox. Dini and Timm's take on Superman wasn't half as strong as their original work on BTAS. And It wasn't because Batman's a better character. When Batman came to the WB converting it to Superman's world kind of sapped a lot of its original quality. Although both versions are great. Especially compared to today's cartoons.

i've noticed a decline in humor/quality as well, today most of the humor is cock jokes (litterally just says 'cock joke') and isnt very funny anymore. i to this day havent understood dad's home and the other one i cant remember at this time. and yet people leave reviews saying it's funny. although i might be hypocritical, because i did enjoy the movies that hollywood made for garbage like me. though the foamy's rants, for example, havent deterred from the original (still just a po'ed squirrell talking about things he hates that you do as well) but the neuroticly yours submissions i dont understand most of the humor, and find the backround more entertaining, even though there is usually just cock jokes there.

Aug. 24, 2008 | 12:20 PM Dekathos responds:

I don't understand Foamy at all. He contradicts himself and usually is not even accurate. Mexicans, babies. It never ends and is constantly repeating itself. Also that black squirrel. It's some sort of horrible racist bi-product of Minstrel theater.

If I think my own animation sucks no way can I enjoy a symbol of a squirrel who doesn't have a mouth that bobs around a jpeg background found on google.

The last few are +4 in score as well. It's very interesting. A few years ago it was not doing that good. I'm not sure it ever did that good. There must be a lot of impressionable new users that sign up on newgrounds everyday that enjoy it more then the old viewers who didn't or have gotten sick of it and have moved on.

I am usually neutral on this. He doesn't care so why should I? But since you brought it up. ;)

And I can't laugh at the cock joke thing. I don't know how something like that can become a fad but it has. Al though I think it's interesting how many users complain about it and how uncomfortable they are. On one hand the joke isn't funny and on the other hand it's pissing people off that are up tight so it can't be all bad.
